Grade 7 Nutrition: Life in the Balance
A classroom curriculum for grade 7 that focuses on nutrition and physical activity. Topics such as energy balance, screen time, target heart rate, added sugars in foods, and breakfast are covered using hands-on activities. The activities reinforce the skills needed to select and prepare healthy meals and snacks, guide physical activity patterns, and foster an environment of family support.
The curriculum is divided into nine lessons on nutrition and/or physical activity. Each lesson consists of two 20-minute parts. However, the two parts can be taught together if a 40-minute instruction period is available.
Grade 7 Lesson 1: A Balanced Life
Students will identify short-term health benefits of doing physical activity and physical activity opportunities and barriers.
Grade 7 Lesson 2: Project Lesson: A Balanced Life
Students will identify physical activity opportunities and barriers to doing physical activity.
Grade 7 Lesson 3: The Reason for Those Milk Mustaches
Students will determine their knowledge of and promote the consumption of low-fat and fat-free calcium-rich foods.
Grade 7 Lesson 4: Portion Distortion
Students will identify strategies for making healthier fast food choices at places where fast food is sold.
Grade 7 Lesson 5: Project Lesson: Portion Distortion
Students will apply strategies for making healthier fast food choices and set a goal to use the strategies at places where fast food is sold.
Grade 7 Lesson 6: Empty Liquid Calories
Students will calculate the amount of sugar and calories and identify benefits in limiting the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.
Grade 7 Lesson 7: The Color Power of Fruits and Veggies
Students will identify the benefits of consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Grade 7 Lesson 8: Screen-Time and Its Consequences
Students will identify the effects of too much screen-time on physical activity, sleep, and energy balance.
Grade 7 Lesson 9: Project Lesson: Screen-Time and Its Consequences
Students will calculate, graph, analyze and set goals for personal screen-time use and MVPA time.
